2006 dodge magnum review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The term crossover vehicle has been thrown around a lot the last couple years, meant to apply to suvs leaning in the direction of cars and/or minivans. But the tag is too vague to mean much.  suddenly, with the dodge magnum, it fit. There was a car with the capability to wean the country off of suvs. Its bold, hot rod lines might scare some people away, but its utility can't be denied. It's a full-size, american car with spacious cargo capacity and available all-wheel drive. It's engineered for safety, styled for image and designed for utility. If those aren't what people want when they buy an suv, what do they want?  plus, the magnum gets better gas mileage than full-size suvs. The base magnum se comes with a 190-hp, double overhead cam v6 that gets 21 to 28 miles per gallon, at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $23,095 including destination. Powered by a 6. 1-liter, v8 hemi making 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the srt8 lives up to the magnum name, accelerating from 0 to 60 in about five seconds and from 0 to 100 and back to 0 in less than 17 seconds. The uniquely tuned, load-leveling, tauter and firmer suspension lowers the srt8's ride height by half an inch. Brakes are vented disc front and rear.  optional features vary by model and packaging and include dual-zone automatic climate control; a power passenger seat; heated front seats; electronic vehicle information center; electrochromic rearview mirror; air filtration; self-sealing (but not run-flat) tires; hands-free cell phone capability; power adjustable pedals; gps navigation system with integrated six-disc cd/mp3 player; rear seat, dvd entertainment system; sirius satellite radio; sunroof; roof rack; cargo cover and net; and load-leveling shocks. One of the several paint colors, inferno red, costs extra 225).  safety features on all models include advanced multistage dual front airbags and the latch child seat anchor system. Side-curtain airbags designed to improve head protection for front- and rear-seat occupants, however, are optional 390). It's a long, low, beefy station wagon on a wide track with big bold grille and a chopped top. It would be an understatement to say the magnum has presence. In fact, there is nothing like it on the road.  however, it's not called a station wagon any more. The epa classifies it as a sport utility. Others call this new direction a sport wagon. The headlamp units are a nice integrated wedge shape. We like them better than those on the new chrysler 300, a magnum sibling, which try harder to be retro. The air dam/bumper cover wraps up under the headlamps and grille, and looks impressively beefy and functional. The srt8 gets a mesh grille insert surrounded by a blockier fascia with a more aggressive air dam and enlarged, brake-cooling ducts.  from the side, the magnum looks like it could be rolled onto the floor of a custom rod show. The wheel cutouts are profound, especially imposing with the 18-inch, 10-spoke wheels on the rt and borderline brutish with the srt8's 20-inchers and ultra-low profile rubber. A big visual effect is created by the tinted glass and roofline sloping back and pinching the rear window. This serves an innovative purpose. The one-piece liftgate is hinged about two feet up into the roof, providing a vast and liberating opening to the cargo area. It requires less ducking to reach things in there, and will be easier on lower backs of all ages. Dodge lists the cargo capacity as 27. 2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 71. 6 cubic feet with them down, while the epa total interior volume indicates 133. 1 cubic feet. We did, and the cargo area looks wider, flatter, longer and easier to access than most suvs. It's usually the length and width and flat floor that matter, and the magnum excels by those measurements.  we also climbed in the back seat and crawled around a bit. There was room to do so, only 10 percent less than in the front seat, according to the sae volume index. In people terms, the rear seat's measurements come within an inch of the front's except in legroom, where the rear seat gives up just over an inch and a half to the front. The 60/40 split rear seat seats three people, but a wide, center armrest with cupholders drops down to make it more comfortable for two. There's plenty of head clearance despite the roofline, which poses no rear visibility problem for the driver. Even so, the chopped-top proportions left us feeling a touch claustrophobic.  the driver should have no problem finding a comfortable position. If anything, this is overkill, but adjustable pedals can help people of small stature (petite women, for example) position themselves farther away from the airbag-equipped steering wheel, lessening the chance of airbag-related injuries.  fabric covers the seats in the se and sxt, with leather optional in the latter and standard in the r/t and the srt8. We found the regular seats generally supportive. However, all of the seats were somewhat short in thigh support.  we really liked the magnum's gauges, handsome and all business, white background with black numbers and stainless trim rings. The navigation system's screen displaces the stereo faceplate, with controls for both functions arrayed around the perimeter.  the console compartment is decent sized, with two levels, the upper stamped with recesses for holding sundry items, and contains practical coin holders. There's also a sunglasses holder within the driver's reach. And speaking of specialized holders, the optional cargo organizer keeps grocery bags from topping over and incorporates a nook designed for holding a one-gallon milk jug.  the magnum takes an innovative approach to placement of the entertainment system's video screen.

Notice: i changed ac condenser, dryer, hoses and added a "remanufactured compressor" from auto zone that crashedfirst test drive. The system still holds pressure but the compressor clutch went out. Interior restored inc, new headliner, dash cap, am/fm cassette, amp and 6 speakers. New door panels, pull handles,console, carpet, shifter knob. Tilt column with new momo wheel. New glass and windshield, swipes and weather strip kit. New wiper motor, arms and blades. New shaker seal rubber,all new decals and pin stripes. New outside door handles. Changed the tail lights and side markers to improve thelook. Installed new heater core and blower fan. (the vents won't change position. Must be a vacuum thing)this is a great car for a son/daughter's first car or college driver as it's not a hot rod!!, it's real close tofactory. With a little work, and a small investment, add an ac compressor clutch, fix the vent thing, detail theunder carriage (i'm disabled and can't get under there myself) color sand/buff the paint (it's fine for a driveras/is btw) and it'll be a $30k plus seller at mecum or barrett-jackson. 2012 mazda mazda2 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Zoom-zooming into its second year. introductionthe mazda2 is a five-seat hatchback, front-wheel-drive subcompact, taking on the toyota yaris, nissan versa, honda fit, ford fiesta, chevrolet sonic, fiat 500, hyundai accent and kia soul. That's a wonderful field of cars for these times (subcompact is the fastest growing automotive segment in the world), and the mazda2 has qualities that, to many, make it the most desirable of this bunch.  the mazda2 was completely redesigned for 2011, so there are no changes for 2012. While new to north america, this is actually the second generation of the mazda2. It makes 100 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 98 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. We had no trouble, in fact we had a blast, running in the fast lane with the 75-mph flow of los angeles freeway traffic. In 310 miles of combined city and highway driving, we averaged 34. 8 miles per gallon, at the top end of the epa estimate of 29 city/35 highway mpg for the 2012 mazda2.  in pursuit of good gas mileage, acceleration and responsive handling, mazda focused on keeping the car light, by using high-strength steel with more welds (and less steel overall), and weld-bonded adhesives in the body. Engineers looked for dozens of places to save a few pounds, for example the wiring harness, door locks and latches, radiator, automatic transmission shifter, pedals, stereo speakers and more. It's this painstaking attention to mechanical detail that makes mazda an exceptional car company.  the final result is 2306 pounds, even less than the two-seat mazda mx5 sports car. It's the lightest subcompact, even lighter than the smaller fiat 500, and way lighter than the ford fiesta, although the toyota yaris is a close second. The yaris has 6 more horsepower, but is not nearly as much fun to drive.  the seats are comfortable and supportive, and we liked the thick, sporty steering wheel. Although rated as a five-seater, we wouldn't subject a fifth person to the back seat for long, but that's no different than any other car in this class. It zoom-zooms to scale. The little engine is gutsy, with a cocky tone at upper revs. Shifting the manual 5-speed is slick and easy. Responsive brakes and steering. Smooth ride and flat cornering. Bluetooth wireless for hands-free cellphone operation 95) is available, also a rear bumper guard 80), cargo net 40), center console with armrest 170). It also has mazda's first brake priority system that automatically puts the brakes on whenever the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed simultaneously. The mazda2 gets europe's highest crash rating of five stars. walkaroundthe styling is fresh, and it's eye-catching in a cute sort of way. The grille isn't loved by everyone, but it is distinctive, which isn't easy to do considering there's no grille work. The hood, fenders, headlamps, bumper, air intakes and 15-inch wheels are all well done, adding character.  the halogen headlamp units flow from the gentle bulge of the front fenders. The three-spoke steering wheel works well, with a meaty rim that makes the mazda2 feel like a sports car, and a padded hub. We think it might look better without all that aluminumy plastic trim on the wide spokes, but no big deal. It tilts for adjustment, and the driver's seat raises and lowers, so almost anyone can find a good place behind the wheel.  what we call aluminumy plastic mazda calls silver garnish, and there's more of it on the vents, armrests, shift knob and gate, where it looks good in sparing doses.  the shifter, manual or automatic, rises from just below the instrument panel where the center console would be if there was one. There's a console with storage tray and cupholders that goes between the seats, with an optional leather padded armrest that we found nice to have. It's no stretch at all to shift gears. The 5-speed stick is easy to reach and fun to use.  the dashboard flows in a continuous line and curves away from occupants, making the cabin feel wide. Certainly there's lots of elbow room. Mazda engineers worked carefully on the position and cross-sectional shape of the a-pillars, which along with a low beltline enable clear forward visibility and also help the car feel roomy.  the cluster of three gauges in front of the driver's eyes is shaded by an eave, with the speedo in center, smaller tach on the left, and the rest in one gauge on the right. In the center of dashboard there's a large round binnacle with sound system information, a cd slot, and three dials for the climate control. Cargo capacity is 13. 3 cubic feet behind the 60/40 split folding second seat, and 27. 8 cubic feet with the second seat folded flat. Hatchbacks with fold-flat rear seats are the best value out there, to carry a lot without spending a lot. driving impressionthe 1. 5-liter engine in the mazda2 is one of the smallest gasoline engines on the u. Market, but its performance is exciting, with a 5-speed manual gearbox. We didn't get to drive the 4-speed automatic, but we have doubts, partly because it's only a 4-speed and partly because it's hard to imagine it making the mazda2 any better to drive than the 5-speed. It sounds good above 4000, and zings responsively all the way up to 6300 redline. The drive-by-wire throttle responds quickly. We read one review that called the engine gutless, but we say nonsense. Although if the mazda2 had the fiesta's 119 horsepower from a related 1. 6-liter engine, it'd be way hot.  it's really smooth at 75 or 80 mph. More mazda attention to mechanical detail. Vented discs in front, drums in the rear, with abs, brake force distribution and brake assist.  the suspension is fairly conventional, with macpherson struts in front and a trailing-arm torsion beam in back. We drove the mazda2 over twisty two-lanes on the california coast, and found that it cornered flat and sucked up most bumps. The electric power steering reacts quickly. summarythe mazda 2 is a strong contender in the competitive subcompact segment. Its soft wedge shape is eye-catching, a cute, sporty and practical hatchback. It's way fun to drive with the manual transmission, while getting more than 30 mpg. All-new mid-size sedan is a compelling buy. introductionthe mid-size, mid-price car market is approaching saturation. Depending on how they're counted, more than seven nameplates compete for shoppers looking for a car that's thrifty, yet performs; that's comfortable, but not expensive; that's fresh and new, but promises to be reliable.  korea's car makers have never been a part of this class. They've danced around the edges, with the kia optima and hyundai sonata. But neither car has broken through and established a solid foothold in the mainstream u. Market.  enter the all-new 2006 hyundai sonata.  while the previous-generation sonata made a dramatic jump to the top spot in the j. Power and associates 2004 initial quality study ranking of entry midsize cars, the 2006 sonata has been completely redesigned. It's bigger, better equipped, more technologically advanced and sharper looking than the 2005 model it replaces.  the class in which the new sonata competes, however, is blurred. Exterior-wise, it goes against mid-size sedans, primarily the honda accord, toyota camry and nissan altima and secondarily against the chevrolet malibu, the kia optima and the upcoming ford fusion. Inside, though, the '06 sonata moves up a class, to large car, which gives it a potential edge in creature comfort.  with minor and essentially immaterial exceptions, it lives up to that potential. It's roomier in almost every dimension than its midsize competitors, which is no surprise. Fit and finish is on a par with most others in the class, which also is no surprise. In terms of performance, it equals or bests comparably featured cars, which is a surprise. It's cleaner, too, than earlier sonatas. Just as important, if not more so, the new sonata is aggressively priced, positioned smack in the middle of the range of prices of the mid-size sedans.  all this combined makes the 2006 hyundai sonata good enough to put the mid-priced, midsize market on notice. Two engines and three transmissions are available. The uplevel engine is a 235-horsepower v6. Standard equipment includes air conditioning; cruise control; power outside mirrors, windows and central locking with keyless remote; am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo; and leather-wrapped, tilt steering wheel. The list of standard items starts with those on the gl and expands to include fog lamps; premium-grade cloth upholstery and cut-pile carpeting; choice of wood-grain or metal-grain interior trim accents; steering wheel-mounted, redundant audio controls; adjustable lumbar in driver's seat; five-function trip computer; carpeted floor mats; and 16-inch alloy wheels in place of the gl's hub-capped steel wheels. The gls order sheet has two option boxes. One is for a power, tilt-and-slide glass sunroof 850). The other is for a premium package 1350) containing the aforementioned sunroof plus auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass (both with a much-appreciated on/off switch), homelink programmable garage and security remote and eight-way power driver's seat.  next up the gls v6 20,895), which comes standard with a five-speed automatic. This brings with it solar control window glass, chrome exterior window trim and chrome-tipped dual exhausts. The sunroof is an option 850). The optional premium sport package 1500) includes the sunroof, 17-inch wheels with michelin pilot tires, the electrochromic rearview mirror with compass, homelink and power driver's seat.  on the top rung is the lx 22,895), which comes with everything on the gls plus leather-trimmed seats and simulated leather interior door panel inserts. Distinguished by chrome exterior door handles, the lx also gets automatic air conditioning with hyundai's air quality system, which shifts to recirculating when it detects offensive or polluted outside air; a sliding cover on the front center console; the auto-dimming inside rearview mirror with compass; the homelink system; the eight-way power driver's seat; and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The sunroof can be obtained separately 850) or as part of an lx-exclusive premium package 1400) that also has a am/fm/cd6 changer/mp3 stereo with subwoofer.  safety features in addition to the mandatory dual-stage front-seat airbags include front-seat side-impact airbags for torso protection and full-coverage side curtain airbags, designed to provide head protection, all standard on all models. Active-safety features include antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and electronic stability control with traction control, all standard. These crash-avoidance features are optional or not available on many of the other vehicles in this class. walkarounddesign tastes are extremely volatile in the automotive world. A styling cue like an arched-eyebrow headlight treatment can go from eye-catching to invisible in a couple years. Or it can survive for decades and come to be accepted as a brand trademark, such as bmw's twin-kidney grille. The hyundai sonata hasn't yet found its signature trademark cues, but the 2006's designers are looking in the right places.  the new sonata's fascia is refreshingly clean and spare, with sharply angled headlight housings and a quiet, clean-cut grille topped with a sliver of chrome. Wide and deep openings beneath the front bumper provide a home for tightly focused foglamps and visually pull the front end closer to the ground while directing cooling air into the radiator. The striking, concave hood reduces the car's perceived mass without cramping the engine compartment.  the side treatment avoids the all-too-common wedge look with an almost horizontal beltline riding above softly shouldered fenders and door panels. Mirrored 'z' seams where the end corners of the bumpers meet the quarter panels add interest, while blacked-out window surrounds play down the tallish side glass. The flat-flanged rims on the up-level 17-inch wheels suggest a high-end european import more than an affordable asian nameplate.  the taillight outlines repeat the headlight shapes and bookend a broad, trapezoidal license plate inset. Again, there's a hint of other cars' architecture, most notably contemporary camrys and accords. Sporty, california hotrod-idiom dual exhausts mark the v6-equipped models. interiorthe 2006 hyundai sonata's interior marks a major step up the quality ladder. Some rough edges on a few plastic molds and a less-than-lustrous finish on some dash panels are the only shortcomings we noticed. The overall look, though, is clearly competitive with most in the class and better than some.  a polished, hard-surfaced applique capped with a thin slice of chrome divides the upper and lower halves of the dash. The upper is a glare-absorbing dark color, the lower a space-enhancing light tone. The passenger airbag enclosure is seamless, mimicking the trend in higher-end midsize sedans.  as with many modern cars, the stereo head is fully integrated into the dash, making difficult any aftermarket customizing of the sound system but adding an upscale touch. Air conditioner controls are mounted beneath the stereo, within the accent trim centered in the lower portion of the center stack. Stereo and air conditioner controls are substantial, finger-friendly, intuitive knobs and buttons, with status and selections clearly displayed in their respective lcd screens.  three round dials in the hooded instrument cluster communicate the bare necessities of operational data to the driver, with the largest the speedometer nestled inside a polished circle. To its left is the tachometer, to its right conjoined water temperature and fuel gauges. In the lower dash to the left of the steering column are a bank of five switch plugs, only two of which are employed in the u. Version, one as an on/off for the esc, the other the dash-light rheostat, and a flip-down storage bin. The ignition key slides into a slot placed where it should be, in the dash to the right of the steering column instead of on the steering column itself.  all models get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. On the gls and lx, the steering wheel serves multiple duties. Besides the obvious, redundant controls for the audio (arrayed somewhat oddly, with the mode selector on top and the volume controlled by the lower two, versus the more common approach of sandwiching the mode button between the volume controls) are appended to the lower left-side of the hub. On the other side of the hub are the cruise controls, with a helpful cancel function.  outward visibility is good, although the wide c-pillars constrict quick, over-the-shoulder traffic checks for lane changing. Rear side windows roll all the way down, thanks to small, fixed, rear quarter windows that move the windows' rear tracks forward in the door. The cloth upholstery on the gl looks and feels durable; on the gls, it's a bit fancier in texture and stitchi. Also standard are latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc), traction control (trac), and a tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe rav4 looks like other contemporary toyotas, featuring an aerodynamically efficient ovoid profile strategically relieved by sharp character lines. A coefficient of drag (cd) of 0. 33 is among the best in its segment and a major factor in minimizing wind noise and maximizing fuel economy.  the rav4's truck-like front end is tautly composed. Visually, the fenders are separate elements from the engine bay, a situation emphasized by a tight rectangular grille that seems to sit comfortably atop the wider bumper slits below. Headlights are compact and focused.  grille, bumpers, and fog light surrounds are all new for 2009. Most noticeable are the new, vertical brake scoops, lined with black ribs, that bite into the bumper beneath the headlights, where the fog lights used to be. (fog lights nestle into these scoops on sport models.) more subtle is the way the main grille now integrates better with the cooling slit just beneath it, while the formerly full-width slit beneath that has been replaced by three smaller slots.  limiteds have a look all their own, with a single, deep, trapezoidal grille opening bolding bisected by a body-color horizontal bar with a large, chrome toyota world-t badge at its center. A pseudo-skid plate wraps up from the bottom, leaving no room for additional lower air intakes. Tubular nacelles supporting the fog lights replace the brake scoops of base and sport models. None of these changes, fortunately, has affected the rav4's low coefficient of drag.  alloy wheels have five spokes on sport, six on limited. A wide track gives the rav4 a solid stance visually, while resisting rollovers in emergency maneuvers.  the side view is oblong, a mix of boxy and oval, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. The fat, triangular c-pillar with the taillight at its base reminds us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the rav4's doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. The taillights are new for 2009, as is the bumper itself, but the changes here are more subtle than at the front. Taillights are positioned high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate, sunk into the lower left side of the swing-gate below the handle, visually balances the spare. The sport model's spoiler hangs conspicuously off the top edge of the roof.  the new sport appearance package for 2009 eliminates the spare entirely, and centers the license plate up high beneath a bright metal strip that's just beneath another world-t badge that is just under the window. A bulge low down on the tailgate fills in the step in the standard bumper when the tailgate is closed. A handle on the left side still betrays the gate's swing-open design, but in spite of this the overall look with the sport appearance package is remarkably more car-like, more station wagon than suv. interiorinside, the 2009 rav4 is as good as ever, which is to say functional if a bit eccentric in style.  placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who has owned a previous rav4. The position and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good; that also applies to the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. The current dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we found in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials are high quality. The standard seat fabric has been upgraded for 2009. Fit and finish is toyota grade, which means excellent. All three trim levels share the same motif, with contrasting but complementary colors and brushed metallic trim elements around the stereo and climate controls, surrounding the shift gate and swooping around the door handles. The standard side-curtain airbags still allow a passenger assist grip, which folds down.

The high-performance 1 series m coupe is gone, replaced by another sporty variant: the 2013 bmw 135is, available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The 2013 bmw 135is is now the most powerful of the bunch, with unique exterior and interior trim.  in some ways, the 1 series is the spiritual successor to the sporty bmw 2002, produced 1968-76, and in some ways the 320i yuppy-mobile that followed. They're available with 6-speed manual or 6-speed steptronic automatic. Bmw says the 128i can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 7. 0 seconds with the automatic, 6. 4 seconds with the manual. Fuel economy for the 2013 bmw 128i coupe is 18/28 mpg city/highway with either transmission; the 2013 bmw 128i convertible achieves 18/27 mpg city/highway with the automatic and 19/28 mpg with the manual.  the bmw 135i features a twin-scroll turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-6, good for 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft. We found the bmw 128i convertible a delight to drive and it has enough power. More fun to drive is a bmw 135i coupe. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes standard; a 6-speed steptronic automatic is optional (no charge).  the bmw 128i convertible 36,900) adds a power-folding soft top and a different wheel style, and does not have rear folding seats.  the bmw 135i coupe 39,300) includes a firmer sport suspension and high-performance brakes, m sport aero body kit, adaptive xenon headlights with washers, sunroof and 18-inch wheels. The technology package adds navigation with real-time traffic information, voice recognition, smartphone integration with bmw apps and the bmw assist crash notification service.  safety features on all 1 series include dual front airbags, seat-mounted front side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags (coupe only), abs, electronic stability control, traction control, cornering brake control, and launch control for getting started on slippery surfaces. The brake lights include a panic-braking mode that lights up the entire lens extra bright whenever the brake pedal is stomped hard. walkaroundthe bmw 1 series is short in the rear compared to the larger 3 series, but it looks good that way. It doesn't look cheap or cut off or bandaged. Every major part of the car, the nose, the bodyside, the roof and the rear end, blends with the rest of the car to make a shorter, narrower version of the 3 series with a different and special roofline. Some would argue, however, that the slab-like sides are bland compared to other, more sculpted bmws.  we like the 135i's aerodynamics package with the huge air intakes below the bumper, necessary for cooling the turbocharger intake air. At the rear, the 135i has a prominent spoiler, while the 128i uses a more gentle lip integrated into the trunk lid. The 128i rear bumper is entirely body-color, lacking the black-out panel seen on the 135i. Drag coefficient on the 128i coupe is 0. 31 cd vs. The 135i coupe's 0. 33 cd.  put the top down on the convertible models, and the flared shoulder line that's shared with the coupes seems to form a single surface that surrounds the interior, like the deck of a small boat. Just about everything inside is in the same location and looks and operates the same way.  we found the front bucket seats to be very comfortable and supportive, with big side bolsters. It includes a central control knob with a separate menu button, while other version add cd, tel, radio, nav, back and option buttons around the controller. Those extra buttons provide easier access various functions, eliminating a few steps. Both versions require some time to learn, but the system in the 1 series is a little more daunting. Having tried idrive numerous times, we're used to it and not entirely annoyed, but many drivers find it overly complicated.  all 1 series coupes come with a 60/40 split folding rear seat than can almost triple the trunk's 10 cubic feet of space. A storage package for the trunk area includes some tie-downs and straps and a 12-volt power point for external accessories. The soft top takes up less trunk space than a convertible hard top would, which is partly why the design uses a soft top. Still, it eats up two cubic feet of cargo space, leaving 8 cubic feet, which is small but not too bad for a convertible.  the convertible's interior room suffers a bit, though hardly enough for a real convertible enthusiast to notice. Front leg room is reduced by a quarter inch, and head room by three-quarters of an inch. The losses in rear-seat room are more consequential, where shoulder room contracts by nearly a foot. Leg room is reduced by three-quarters of an inch, and head room by just 0. 1 inch. Coupe or convertible, the two-passenger rear seat is rather inhospitable. 2012 mazda mazda2 sport review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Zoom-zooming into its second year. introductionthe mazda2 is a five-seat hatchback, front-wheel-drive subcompact, taking on the toyota yaris, nissan versa, honda fit, ford fiesta, chevrolet sonic, fiat 500, hyundai accent and kia soul. That's a wonderful field of cars for these times (subcompact is the fastest growing automotive segment in the world), and the mazda2 has qualities that, to many, make it the most desirable of this bunch.  the mazda2 was completely redesigned for 2011, so there are no changes for 2012. While new to north america, this is actually the second generation of the mazda2. It makes 100 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 98 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. We had no trouble, in fact we had a blast, running in the fast lane with the 75-mph flow of los angeles freeway traffic. In 310 miles of combined city and highway driving, we averaged 34. 8 miles per gallon, at the top end of the epa estimate of 29 city/35 highway mpg for the 2012 mazda2.  in pursuit of good gas mileage, acceleration and responsive handling, mazda focused on keeping the car light, by using high-strength steel with more welds (and less steel overall), and weld-bonded adhesives in the body. Engineers looked for dozens of places to save a few pounds, for example the wiring harness, door locks and latches, radiator, automatic transmission shifter, pedals, stereo speakers and more. It's this painstaking attention to mechanical detail that makes mazda an exceptional car company.  the final result is 2306 pounds, even less than the two-seat mazda mx5 sports car. It's the lightest subcompact, even lighter than the smaller fiat 500, and way lighter than the ford fiesta, although the toyota yaris is a close second. The yaris has 6 more horsepower, but is not nearly as much fun to drive.  the seats are comfortable and supportive, and we liked the thick, sporty steering wheel. Although rated as a five-seater, we wouldn't subject a fifth person to the back seat for long, but that's no different than any other car in this class. It zoom-zooms to scale. The little engine is gutsy, with a cocky tone at upper revs. Shifting the manual 5-speed is slick and easy. Responsive brakes and steering. Smooth ride and flat cornering. Bluetooth wireless for hands-free cellphone operation 95) is available, also a rear bumper guard 80), cargo net 40), center console with armrest 170). It also has mazda's first brake priority system that automatically puts the brakes on whenever the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed simultaneously. The mazda2 gets europe's highest crash rating of five stars. walkaroundthe styling is fresh, and it's eye-catching in a cute sort of way. The grille isn't loved by everyone, but it is distinctive, which isn't easy to do considering there's no grille work. The hood, fenders, headlamps, bumper, air intakes and 15-inch wheels are all well done, adding character.  the halogen headlamp units flow from the gentle bulge of the front fenders. The three-spoke steering wheel works well, with a meaty rim that makes the mazda2 feel like a sports car, and a padded hub. We think it might look better without all that aluminumy plastic trim on the wide spokes, but no big deal. It tilts for adjustment, and the driver's seat raises and lowers, so almost anyone can find a good place behind the wheel.  what we call aluminumy plastic mazda calls silver garnish, and there's more of it on the vents, armrests, shift knob and gate, where it looks good in sparing doses.  the shifter, manual or automatic, rises from just below the instrument panel where the center console would be if there was one. There's a console with storage tray and cupholders that goes between the seats, with an optional leather padded armrest that we found nice to have. It's no stretch at all to shift gears. The 5-speed stick is easy to reach and fun to use.  the dashboard flows in a continuous line and curves away from occupants, making the cabin feel wide. Certainly there's lots of elbow room. Mazda engineers worked carefully on the position and cross-sectional shape of the a-pillars, which along with a low beltline enable clear forward visibility and also help the car feel roomy.  the cluster of three gauges in front of the driver's eyes is shaded by an eave, with the speedo in center, smaller tach on the left, and the rest in one gauge on the right. In the center of dashboard there's a large round binnacle with sound system information, a cd slot, and three dials for the climate control. Cargo capacity is 13. 3 cubic feet behind the 60/40 split folding second seat, and 27. 8 cubic feet with the second seat folded flat. Hatchbacks with fold-flat rear seats are the best value out there, to carry a lot without spending a lot. driving impressionthe 1. 5-liter engine in the mazda2 is one of the smallest gasoline engines on the u. Market, but its performance is exciting, with a 5-speed manual gearbox. We didn't get to drive the 4-speed automatic, but we have doubts, partly because it's only a 4-speed and partly because it's hard to imagine it making the mazda2 any better to drive than the 5-speed. It sounds good above 4000, and zings responsively all the way up to 6300 redline. The drive-by-wire throttle responds quickly. We read one review that called the engine gutless, but we say nonsense. Although if the mazda2 had the fiesta's 119 horsepower from a related 1. 6-liter engine, it'd be way hot.  it's really smooth at 75 or 80 mph. More mazda attention to mechanical detail. Vented discs in front, drums in the rear, with abs, brake force distribution and brake assist.  the suspension is fairly conventional, with macpherson struts in front and a trailing-arm torsion beam in back. We drove the mazda2 over twisty two-lanes on the california coast, and found that it cornered flat and sucked up most bumps. The electric power steering reacts quickly. summarythe mazda 2 is a strong contender in the competitive subcompact segment. Its soft wedge shape is eye-catching, a cute, sporty and practical hatchback. It's way fun to drive with the manual transmission, while getting more than 30 mpg. With the segment's only rear-hinged side access doors, the regular cab gives excellent recline space and an easy reach to everything dropped behind the seat. At the other end of the scale, premium models include two-tone leather seats, polished 22-inch wheels and other touches: within those extremes lies something for everyone.  2008 marks the first availability of an xl-grade supercrew with 5. 5- or 6. 5-foot bed: maximum people space with a work truck ethic. Detail changes for 2008 run the gamut from functional to decorative, the latter a wheels and stripes package for stx models, the former a standard tachometer for xl and stx with manual transmission, tire pressure monitors on the heavy-duty package, plus the availability of a cargo management system, remote start, telescoping towing mirrors, and a rearview camera (that does not require purchase of a navigation system).  with one of the deepest beds in the half-ton pickup segment, the f-150 has generous cargo volume out back and a maximum payload rating of 3,050 pounds. A foose edition f-150 designed by hot-rod master chip foose will be available as a late-2008 model. The base f-150 xl 17,345) is a short, regular cab two-wheel drive. Wheels are steel, the grille is black and bumpers painted, vinyl covers the floor and seats, and the audio is am/fm. However, it does have intermittent wipers, map lights, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with driver lumbar adjustment, and on supercabs 23,440) air conditioning. Since it frequently adds other upgrades and a larger engine, 4wd adds almost $6,000 (and a v8) to the most basic example and $3,000 to the lowest-priced supercab.  stx models up the ante without going broke, with body-color front and rear bumpers and grille trim, air conditioning, cd player, and cloth upholstery. A 4x2 regular cab short bed starts at $21,050 and a 4x4 supercab flareside goes for $29,045; there is no stx supercrew.  central to the lineup, and sales, is the xlt. To an stx it adds chrome bumpers, black honeycomb grille, remote keyless entry, power mirrors/locks/windows, carpeting, auto headlamps, tinted windows, and better fabric for the 40/20/40 seat. Hefty rubber mats protect the carpet; other upgrades include a leather-wrapped wheel, unique instrument display, and sport cloth upholstery with driver and passenger lumbar support. Monotone paint includes the bumpers (gray with tow-tone paint), flares cover 18-inch aluminum wheels, and the door gets keypad entry. On regular cabs 24,105-30,645) the fx4 is $5,750 over the fx2 and there's no long-wheelbase fx4; on supercab and supercrew 28,700-35,445), the 4wd version is a $3,295 premium.  the lariat label is reserved for more luxurious, car-like interiors, and does not include regular cab or flareside models; retail prices range from $29,895-$35,595. Fancy bits include 18-inch aluminum wheels, power heated mirrors with signal repeaters, climate control, leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel, powered driver's seat, trip computer, light-faced gauges, and chrome and arizona beige trim.  for 2008, ford will build 5,000 lariat limited f-150s, replete with serial-number plates, spun-metal instrument cluster trim, two-tone leather cabin, color-matched grille and bumpers, and three-dimensional chrome bed side badging. Limited models are offered only as 139-inch wheelbase supercrews in two- 35,160) or all-wheel drive 38,160).  top tier among regular production models is the king ranch, with castano leather modeled after the saddles that roamed the texas ranch. Exterior trim is similar to lariats, with color-matching components and arizona beige accents. At this level, items such as heated power seats and power-folding mirrors are standard. And the 2008 ford f-150 shows the evolution of 70 years of function. Angular means easy to clean, easy to park and gives maximum inside volume for outside space. The f-150 is easily recognized in any trim level by the circular front lights within a rectangular housing, stepped front window ledge, opening rear doors on the regular cab, and the tall bed. For 2008, extendable dual-element towing mirrors bring the f-150 in line with the bigger super duty pickups, as well as the ram, titan, and tundra. Any cosmetic sacrifice is well worth the extra visibility with a trailer behind.  pillars between the doors may yield a blind spot for those who sit more rearward and everyone should appreciate the windshield pillar designed to help preserve forward vision. The flareside really is more stylish than the styleside bed, that which is essentially a box with some character lines in the sheetmetal, and more space within. The chrome harley badges are a bit much for some of us, but it drew many admiring looks. interiorford has all bases covered inside the f-150, with plenty of patterns, textures and finishes, including at least three different gauges clusters, and the choice of a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat or captain's chairs in many models. Captain's chairs on fx and lariat models, especially with power adjustment and the optional adjustable pedals, provide good driver positioning for virtually everyone. Finding it may take some time because the backrest angle adjustment is manual and the power controls are on the side of the seat with the door very close.

The design of the prowler was said to have been inspired after chrysler engineers were given free rein to create whatever they wanted in a "hot rod" or "sportster" type vehicle. One of the most striking design features of the prowler are the open, indy racer style front wheels. Prowler joins the ranks of production cars, however limited, as new chrysler concept cars are introduced at detroit's north american international auto show. Prowler still draws the crowds, however, and some spectators still can't believe it's going to be available at selected chrysler-plymouth dealerships nationally. The plymouth brand prowler ends production with a total of 8,527 prowlers being built (7,929 us, 488 canada, 110 pilots). From 2001 to 2002 only 3,170 chrysler prowlers were built! In 2001 the first chrysler prowler produced is midnight blue pearl coat metallic. This is the ninth color in the prowler collection and is announced as the mulholland edition, named after the famous street in los angeles. The mulholland edition is a midnight blue pearl coat with a light blue hand painted pin stripe and dark blue convertible top. The pin stripe is hand painted by dr.
